A beautiful wedding destination in the San Juan Islands
Some places in the Pacific Northwest feel special the moment you arrive. Roche Harbor on San Juan Island is absolutely one of those places.
While preparing for a wedding I will be coordinating this July, I had the opportunity to spend some time exploring the area around Roche Harbor near Friday Harbor. The wedding itself will take place at a private residence located within the Roche Harbor Resort community. The home sits just before the main resort area where the hotel, shops, pool, and guest cabins are located, giving it a private and peaceful feel while still being close to everything Roche Harbor offers.
As a wedding planner, visiting the area ahead of time is always one of my favorite parts of the job. It allows me to get familiar with the surroundings, explore locations guests may want to visit during the weekend, and soak in the atmosphere that makes a place unique.
And Roche Harbor definitely has its own magic.
The Charm of Roche Harbor Resort
Roche Harbor Resort is one of the most well known destinations in the San Juan Islands. Sitting right on the waterfront, it is home to the historic Hotel de Haro, a landmark that has welcomed visitors since the late 1800s.
The harbor itself is full of sailboats and yachts, with docks stretching out across the water and restaurants and small shops lining the shoreline. It feels relaxed and lively at the same time.
Because of its incredible scenery and walkable layout, Roche Harbor has become one of the most popular wedding destinations in the region. Couples often choose the resort because everything is conveniently located in one place. There are multiple ceremony and reception spaces, waterfront views, and charming cabins available for guests who want to stay on site for the weekend.
It is the kind of place where a wedding can easily turn into a full weekend experience for everyone attending.
A Visit to Lime Kiln Point State Park
While exploring the island, I also made a stop at Lime Kiln Point State Park, which is home to one of the most iconic lighthouses in Washington.
This is where some of my favorite photos from the trip were taken. The lighthouse sits perched on rocky shoreline cliffs with sweeping views across the water. It is one of the best places on San Juan Island to take in the beauty of the surrounding islands and coastline.
Cooper, joined me for the adventure and was more than happy to pose with the lighthouse behind him. It was a beautiful day, with sunshine reflecting across the water and a light breeze moving through the trees.
A Sweet Stop at Lime Kiln Café
No visit to Roche Harbor would be complete without stopping by the Lime Kiln Café.
They are famous for their house made donuts that are made fresh daily, and I had to try them for myself. While I would not normally call myself a huge donut person, these absolutely lived up to the reputation. Breakfast was on point and hit the spot as well!
The donuts were warm, fresh, and completely scrumptious.
It is little touches like this that make Roche Harbor such a fun destination for wedding weekends. Guests can explore the marina, grab coffee and pastries in the morning, walk along the waterfront, and enjoy the laid back charm of the island.
Why Couples Love the San Juan Islands
The San Juan Islands have a way of slowing everything down in the best possible way. The views are expansive, the air feels fresh, and there is a sense of calm that makes it the perfect setting for a wedding celebration.
Between Roche Harbor’s historic charm, the surrounding coastal beauty, and the quiet moments you can find at places like Lime Kiln Point State Park, it is easy to see why so many couples choose this area for their wedding weekend.
